The solution is quite simple, just type some magic words in the search bar, gotcha, then delete these orphans again. Well, it’s a good analogy, but not funny at all. The item still exists and still uses space towards your storage quota, but it may be a little harder to find. If an item in Google Drive loses all of its parent folders, it becomes an orphan.

Then I spent hours on searching this issue, found that Google experts gave them a beautiful name: ‘ Orphaned Files’: I deleted all the older duplicate folders, emptied the trash, but the space usage did not decrease for a single BYTE. Wait, that’s not the most impressive part. Instead of my expectation of checking the completeness of backup, this poor guy started uploading all the files, all over again… GOSH! I opened the web interface, and now every folder has got a perfectly identical copy. Then I log out my account, and log in again. It seems that thousands of files are already very time-consuming on its POST (power on self test).

I restarted the software to test its loading speed. Who knows? That’s just another thoughtless design when implementing new features. My conjecture is that the iOS Google Drive app will dynamically add hidden links for those unlinked folders in the ‘My Drive’ tab.

But the weird thing is, after I browsed some unlinked folders in the iOS Google Drive app and switch back to PDF Expert, those unlinked folders magically appeared, which are not supposed to be there.

When I opened my Google Drive account in PDF Expert, it only shows the contents of the original two tabs, plus linked folders from the ‘Computers’ tab. I tested third-party applications support on my iPad afterwards. Though files can be recovered from the trash, this operation is still very dangerous. But if I delete it in the ‘My Drive’ tab - it’s gone on your computer, ignoring what you’ve set. They are now existing in two locations at the same time! Now, if I delete this folder/file in the ‘Computers’ tab, the ‘Backup and Sync’ app will behave as your preference sets: straightly delete it on your computer, ask your choice, or just keep it on your computer. The actual problem is, folders and files in the ‘Computer’ tab can be linked to the ‘My Drive’ tab through simply right clicking. That’s just like adding a new disk volume ‘E’ with the prior ones ‘C’ and ‘D’. Then I checked the web interface, found that a new tab ‘Computers’ was added, parallel to the original ‘My Drive’ and the ‘Shared with me’ tab. Folders and files are uploaded to the cloud after selection. The installation and account linking processes are nothing unusual. The new features are indeed attractive, but the side effects are just too toxic to ignore. However, after I put my theory into practice, I found that my imagination turns out to be an unrealistic dream. That should greatly improve the data security and access mobility of my files.

I was quite excited about it, because the old client was very inconvenient, which could only sync a stand-alone ‘Google Drive’ folder. In June 2017, Google replaced the desktop Google Drive client with a new app called ‘Backup and Sync’. Google Drive ‘Backup and Sync’: Traps and Pitfalls
